Apple support for new video standards

These days, a lot of video quality happens:

  • Higher resolutions: 4K / 8K
  • Higher color range: 10/12 bit color
  • New codecs: H265 / AV1
  • HDR

If your screen supports all this, I assume that these features will allow you to enjoy the video comfortably and completely. It's about supporting GPUs, as the immense number of mathematical calculations will bring even the most powerful CPUs to safety on the ground. With this setting:

  1. What is the current state of the Macs in terms of supporting these features? (January 2019)
  2. When can Mac owners expect to be up-to-date with the new video standards? (In other words, what must be required for a fully hardware-accelerated rendering?)
