Chocolate Chips

According to Nestle, Mrs. Wakefield (owner of the Toll House Inn) made chocolate biscuits, but she cut off the normal baker's chocolate and replaced it with broken pieces of semisweet chocolate. Obviously not, and the chocolate biscuit was born. Wakefield sold the recipe to Nestle in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate chips (instead of patenting and earning billions!). Each bag of Nestle chocolate chips in North America has a variation of their original recipe on the back (margarine is now included) both as a variant of butter and for those who want to pretend to be healthy).
