Exposure – How to photograph a dark room

I tried to photograph a room at dusk. No artificial light and the room was quite dark – it was hard to read but not dark. I have set the parameters so that the light meter in the camera has been adjusted in the middle. I expected that the photo would have many dark tones. But the photo was well lit. In the photo, the room actually seemed brighter than it actually was. What's happening? And what can I do to capture the dark shadows?

I have taken with a Nikon D7200 and a 50mm F / 1.8 lens
