network – Why is connecting a range extender to a point isolated access point considered “insecure”?

Just trying to understand. Spectrum actively blocks any third party router, switch, range extender, etc from being able to use the ethernet port on my Ruckus R610 for “security” concerns.

I also don’t understand how the router can distinguish between me connecting my laptop via ethernet vs the range extender.

Nmap results incorrect when connecting via VPN

I am trying to determine why my nmap results are incorrect when I am connected to a VPN provider.

As you can see below nmap reports that ports are open when connecting to a VPN provider even though the host has no open ports.

Here’s an example:

Powershell connecting to Azure SQL DB errors out using Active Directory Password authentication

The following powershell script connects to an Azure SQL database using Active Directory Password authentication.

Add-Type -Path ('C:Program FilesPackageManagementNuGetPackagesMicrosoft.Data.SqlClient.2.1.3runtimeswinlibnetcoreapp2.1Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.dll') -ReferencedAssemblies Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SNI
 $con = New-Object Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
 $con.ConnectionString =  ";Authentication=Active Directory Password;Initial Catalog=DBname;UID=userid;PWD=passwd;Trusted_Connection=False;Encrypt=True;Connection Timeout=60;"
 $query = "select * from (dbo).(testing_table)"
 Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Data
 $cmd = New-object Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand($query,$con)
 $adp = New-Object Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter $cmd
$data = New-Object System.Data.DataSet
$adp.Fill($data) | Out-Null
 #$ds = New-Object Microsoft.Data.DataSet ($adp).fill($ds) | out-null

When executed in Powershell 7, the script returns with the error:

Line |
   8 |   $con.Open()
     |   ~~~~~~~~~~~
     | Exception calling "Open" with "0" argument(s): "The type initializer for 'Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlAuthenticationProviderManager' threw an exception."
Line |
  15 |  $adp.Fill($data) | Out-Null
     |  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     | Exception calling "Fill" with "1" argument(s): "The type initializer for 'Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlAuthenticationProviderManager' threw an exception."

Is there something missing in the script? How can we make it work for multi-factor authentication as well?

java – Is there any sample implementation of MQTT for connecting an android device to PC?

I am working on a project in which i need to connect an Android device to a PC through adapter adapter.
the plan is to use MQTT protocol for connecting them and implement the MQTT client and use an open source MQTT broker.
My questions are:

  1. Is there any suggestion for MQTT broker? I found mosquitto and moquette. Although the download link for binary listener for the second is dead.
  2. Is there any sample project that uses USBC -> ethernet for mqtt client and mqtt broker? (more preferably in Java as this should be used on Android device)

it would be great if the sample project shows how the following steps will be implemented for the use case i explained (borrowed the following example from this git-repository).

    MqttClient client = new MqttClient("tcp://localhost:1883", MqttClient.generateClientId());
    MqttMessage message = new MqttMessage();
    client.publish("iot_data", message);

    System.out.println("tMessage '"+ messageString +"' to 'iot_data'");

    MqttClient client=new MqttClient("tcp://localhost:1883", MqttClient.generateClientId());
    client.setCallback( new SimpleMqttCallBack() );

8 – Connecting to non-Drupal database

Is it possible to use Drupal’s Database Abstraction Layer to connect to a non-drupal database?

I have secondary non-Drupal database configured in my settings.php, and when I attempt to use getConnection() on it, I get redirect to the /core/install.php page. I have a need to connect to a second, non-Drupal remote database for a custom module I am building to gather reporting data from an external source that doesn’t have an API available.

macos – Mac OS X running so hot when connecting to a secondary monitor

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

enter image description here

I’m not sure if anyone else also experiencing this high CPU on their Mac Book and lead to a really hot fire 🔥. I’ve experienced this issue a few months after getting this Mac, since then I experienced it every day.

I’m currently on the latest OS BigSur. As you can this Mac is fairly new and fully loaded.
It’s kind of sad when it’s hot over an app like Chrome or when I connect to a secondary monitor and almost have nothing running at all, and Apple technician can’t find anything wrong with it while I brought it to the store twice, and create multiple cases against this Mac. All they say is, they find nothing wrong with it, while I am suffering every day with these types of issues. They suggested me bring it to the store to have it look at, I did that twice, and they find nothing twice.

More details, I asked here

I tried calling Apple support multiple times, they walked me to reset SMC fan so many times, and it still seems to overheat back (same day). Reset the NV Ram, and not help. They suggested I upgrade the OS. I did that. They suggested I reinstall the OS. Install all apps one by one, I did that.

I’ve tried to take my own steps like :

removing/disabled chrome extensions that I think it might have something to do with all of these. I asked here.

remove any old inbox that I think I don’t need in this Mac

tried with different monitors (34LGUC98 & Dell 34″), with USB-C & HDMI with Apple OEM adapter, while Mac connecting to a default power brick 96W. It got hot doesn’t matter which monitor, or cables, I plugged in.

I’ve tried to install driver even if I don’t think I need

I’m thinking to call Apple Support again and maybe have them look at my Mac remotely, but it feels like I’m going to stuck in the loop, where they will tell me to do the same things, waste so much of my times, and ended up … nothing wrong with my mac while it’s clearly is.

I just need my Mac to run like normal again 😢

I had to sacrifice/broke a fan to make it slanted pointed to my mac keyboard area while using it, so my fingers don’t get burned and my mac won’t freeze while working, no one should go through all of that.

Timeout connecting to PostgreSQL from remote address

I’m going nuts here.

We had a production server running PostgreSQL 9.6; it took a dump on Thursday, we thought we had it up and running, but discovered an issue this morning with a materialized view. Any attempt to drop, alter, index or analyze the view locked up without throwing an error.

First step was to reinstall 9.6. On doing so, we were able to restore the data with no errors, and everything looked fine from the local machine.

However, we were not able to connect to the database from any remote IP address on the server’s network.

The system sits on a private network, and I connect to it through VPN. Two production web servers connect to it via the private network.

We’re running Windows Server 2016, and have tried the following to absolutely no effect:

  • Edited postgresql.conf ‘listen_addresses’ to ‘*’, ‘’, ”, and a comma deliminted list of these.

  • Changed the port in postgresql.conf

  • Edited pg_hba.conf file to: ‘’, ‘X.Y.Z.0/24’, ‘samenet’

  • Deleted and recreated the Windows firewall policy

  • Loosened up the incoming IP address restrictions in Windows firewall
    until there were no IP restrictions.

  • Turned off Windows firewall.

  • Deleted PostgreSQL 9.6, scrubbed every reference to it from the
    registry, except for benign entries like ‘recent items’, deleted
    every file from the HD.

  • Installed PGSQL 13

Same issue.

Tried these additional steps in 13, again, with no effect.

  • Changed the port in postgresql.conf

  • Changed the ‘listen_addresses’ in posgresql.conf to variations used

  • Used ‘all’ in ADDRESS field of the PGSQL 13 pg_hba.conf file as well as the other options (, X.Y.0.0/16)

As far as I know, I’ve tried all the obvious fixes: pg_hba.conf, postgresql.conf, Windows firewall, with absolutely no change.

Short of torching the whole d*mn thing and starting over, I don’t know what else to try.

Apps (WhatsApp/Google Messages etc.) not connecting to Web version unless manually opened and notifications are delayed

I have a Google Pixel 4A with latest OS update (Android 11, May 5 2021). Most my apps are not active unless I manually launch them from my phone, which causes web version of them not working unless I launch them as well. I also notice an app which should have notifications shown at 12AM everyday shown about some minutes late instead (sometimes can be 30+ minutes late if I don’t use my phone at all). So far I noticed these apps don’t have notifications/web connection: Google (SMS) Messages, WhatsApp and Outlook.

I have already checked:

  • Restart the phone.

  • The phone is not on Battery Saving/Data Saving mode.

  • Most of the time it happens, my phone is fully charged and is plugged (right in front of me).

  • The apps including Google Play Services are NOT battery-optimized:

Is there anything I am missing? Thanks.

transit – Travelling with controlled substances through Doha, Qatar on a connecting flight?

You’re probably OK, but I’d still skip the narcotics and anything you don’t have a prescription for.

All the Gulf states, including Qatar, enforce very strict drug controls. Qatar has a list of all drugs you’re allowed to bring into the country, and if it’s not on there, you can’t bring it in even with a prescription. However…

You’re not actually entering Qatar, you’re just passing through in transit, which means you’re not going to pass through Customs. Now, there may be a random check of incoming passengers at the gate, but these are rare, and if you have a prescription, aren’t entering the country and only have personal use quantities, they are highly unlikely to care.

Also, while it’s not the focus of your question, I’d be very, very careful about importing narcotics to the US. If at all possible, you’d probably be better off getting a prescription and buying them in the US after you’ve arrive.

Connecting AWS Quicksight to AWS hosted Lightsail instance mysql database with Cpanel

I am currently using AWS hosting and pretty new with it. We have a lightsail instance loaded on it with capnel that has the MySQL database for the wordpress installation we have done.

I am trying to connect Quicksight by adding a database to the account and connecting using the MySQL connector. This connector on validation throws the error :

Packet for query is too large (5526600 > 1048576). You can change this value on the server by setting the max_allowed_packet’ variable.

I tried increasing the maxallowed packet on PHP My admin but it still does not work. Can anyone guide me a work around to get this accomplished.
