finder – macOS NO new file here, advantages?

This is likely to get closed as opinion-based, but I’d ask “What’s the perceived benefit of being able to create a blank file to then have to open it in a separate action?”
Why not just generate new files in the application you’re going to use them in?

You can, if you need for arcane or esoteric purposes, easily create a blank file in Terminal with touch.

finder – bulk search and copy files on a mac

So i had previously used a software where i could paste a list of file names and automate it to copy all those files and paste into destination folder. Unfortunately i am unable to find it.

So the problem i have now is “how can i bulk search and copy files from a folder to destination folder”

I have a folder with around 2000 images.
and i have all these images names in an excel.

So i have already selected few image names on that excel which i can curate in a plaintext too.
But i am unable to find a way search these names and copy those files into another folder.

I really hope there is someone here who can help me find a solution.

Looking forward to all the help and suggestions

Is there an SVG version of the Finder icon from macOS Big Sur?

In a project I’m working on, we have icons to represent different platforms. Since we support both macOS and iOS, we don’t want to use the Apple logo for either because it’s ambiguous between those two platforms. Currently we are using this icon to represent macOS, since it’s the Finder icon from macOS Big Sur:

However, we are looking to replace the platform icons with SVG files (preferably lightweight ones), so that they will look great at any resolution, while being smaller in file size. Is there any way I could get an SVG version of this icon without re-creating it?

finder – Numbers: Possible to transpose Rows and Columns during Import of txt file?

I have a txt file which has 5,000 data points separated by commas.

i.e. data123,data456,data17,data918,etc,etc

If I open this txt file in Numbers, it creates each item as its own column, whereas I want each item to be its own row.

I can use the Table > Transpose Rows and Columns option, but Numbers is only able to have a maximum of 1,000 columns, and so there are 4,000 points of data that are missing from my spreadsheet using this method.

Is there a way that I can open the txt file in Numbers with the comma separated values each being created as a row instead of a column to begin with?

Thank you so much for any help!

finder – Change File Picker Dialog folder location (avoid latest visited folder)

Whenever a File picker dialog (MacOs Catalina) is being open by a website or in general within the operating system, the UI shows as a default folder the latest used/visited one.

Let’s consider this typical workflow:

  1. I’m saving a file in Word using the Save button, which brings up a File Picker Dialog and I save my document in let say ~/Desktop/myfolder
  2. After some time (even hours later) a website prompts me for a file Upload, which opens the same File Picker Dialog
  3. Here’s the issue: File Picker Dialog opens – by default- into the latest used folder from the Picker Dialog, so the file Picker UI will show files in ~/Desktop/myfolder.

This is pretty inconvenient as it can expose privacy files when screen-sharing or having someone next on me when using the MacOS.

Is it possible to use a Default folder for the file picker that opens up always for example in ~/Desktop or just ~ ?

Copy files from Finder search results with directory structure/hierarchies intact on macOS?

I found results for similar variations of this question, but none that really provided a solution for my specific case.

I have a lot of preset files with a specific extension (.tfx) on a backup drive. The files are scattered around in different folder paths within a specific backup folder structure. I need to find a way to copy all of these files with their directory structure intact, and I need to be able to filter the searched results by date range, and only keep the most recently modified versions of any file.

The catch here is the ability to find and copy only the specific file type, and only modified within a specific date range, and so that older versions of the same file in the same relative path would be overwritten by the newest versions without prompting me to confirm every case where this occurs (because there will be hundreds of them).

I also need to eliminate the dated backup folders from the target hierarchy so that there is only one hierarchy in the target path instead of several copies from backups I made on different dates.

The ideal solution would be to make an app using Automator so that I could simply use Finder to find the files I want to copy within a specific backup path and modified date range, then drag/drop all of those results onto the app, which would then prompt me for the parent/destination folder for the files I want to copy with their folder hierarchies intact. And if any of the files being copied exist in the target location and have a more recent modification date, the newer files would not be overwritten.

I figured out how to do this on Windows 10 using a batch script and robocopy to basically sync changes from one folder path to another on a mounted network drive. But I’m not sure how I can do this on macOS.

Thank you in advance for anyone who can help with this!

terminal – Force the use of a modifier key in order to drag/move files in Finder

Disclaimer: I have actual clinically diagnosed OCD, so please, excuse my request if you find it silly, thank you.

Sometimes I misclick while using Finder, and as a result, files are dragged and moved between folders, or I double click to open a file and instead it gets me to rename it.

Can I use Terminal, or some kind of script, to prevent Finder from click-drag-moving or renaming files (unless a user defined modifier key is pressed at the same time, like alt or cmd)

There’s the esc button in order to cancel an action, indeed, (as well as the Undo function), but unfortunately due to my OCD, it doesn’t reassure me.

finder – How can I open my Downloads folder in one click?

How can I open my Downloads folder in one click?

Downloads are my most important folder because that’s where the new files go. Yet, it is the only folder I can’t make an alias for, meaning I can open it in a single click from my dock or home screen.

What success looks like:
Opening the Downloads folder in one click (A keyboard shortcut would be fine too).

Here’s what hasn’t been working:

  • Using spotlight to search for my Downloads (slow)
-right clicking Downloads in my dock and then opening the folder from there (2 clicks)

Since I open my Downloads folder so many times per day, I really want a way to open it in one click.

Note: Somebody already came up with a neat solution here, but it unfortunately brings ALL finder windows that might be open to the front, which is not really wanted behavior.
