air travel – Transporting lots of luggage at Luton airport

You could get a man and van hire company to drive you there and help unload and get the luggage into the airport. To them it won’t make much difference whether they’re carrying moving boxes and furniture or suitcases. In fact, suitcases are easier to carry. If there’s two of you, you can use two trolleys easily.

Most of these companies charge per the hour, anywhere from around 20 to 50 GBP per hour. They are usually meant for moving and removals, but I’m sure they’ll take an easy job such as this. You can offer to pay for the parking too.

I’ve googled “Luton Man and Van” and went on the first non-add link here. This is 30 GBP per hour for one man and one van, two hours minimum.

Or you could get a large taxi/uber and offer the driver 10 or 20 GBP cash to help you carry all the stuff inside.

samsung – Note 9 Device Care shows lots of videos that don’t exist

The issue is that my phone keeps telling me it is running out of space. I found this very strange, since I always delete a lot of stuff after backing it up. I went into Device Care, and on the simplified view it shows me I have 10MB of Photos and 2.3GB of videos (all normal there), but when I click on the Advanced view it shows I have over 44GB of Photos and Videos (that is not normal).
So there is a HUGE discrepancy between the simplified view (which I believe is correct) and the Advanced view. You can click on the “Photos and Videos” tab and it will open up the Gallery where it shows … 1 video (which is 2.3GB in size), and a handful of photos.

I started noticing this after I started recording my Guild’s matches (in a mobile game) to share it with my Guild. After uploading those videos I’d immediately delete them off of my phone.
I’m guessing that the built in Screen Recorder is, perhaps, making a backup of those videos somewhere? Or when I delete those Screen Recordings the space isn’t being freed up properly?

I’ve tried Restarting, Shutting Down for a minute then turning it back on, deleting the Cache for most of my apps (including google services, device care, etc), searched every folder and sub-folder on my phone to try and find these videos but found none.

Anyone got any ideas, other than a factory reset?

c# – Which design pattern to use for a calculation pipeline with lots of varying rules

I’m currently trying to solve a problem with some legacy code that makes some calculations in order to find out the final value of a monetary benefit. The legacy code uses an imperative approach with lots of if and elses to handle calculation rules for each kind of benefit, which I believe will be hard to mantain and reuse, since those rules can change drastically based on a change of law. (not to mention that the calculation logic is heavily tangled with presentation logic)

So I’ve been trying to find a design pattern which could help me in this situation. My initial thought was to use the Strategy pattern to handle the different kinds of calculations and a factory to choose the correct strategy implementation, but I believe this wont work out due to the number of different calculations (there’s 15 currently, with more to be defined).

So after further research, I’ve found out about the Rule Pattern and the Specification Pattern and I thought they looked promising so I tried to implement a solution by adapting them, but I’ve hit some roadbumps.

My implementation basically tries to select the appropriate calculation rules using the Specification pattern, and then apply the appropriate calculation rules in the order they’re defined. Each specification would have a pipeline of calculation rules attached to them, and if the specification is suitable, the pipeline of rules would be applied.

Here’s my implementation:

The specification would have a set of rules, with a method IsSatisfiedBy defining if the rule should be applied base on the benefit data and the calculation rules, which are registered by an domain expert.

I’m not sure if I’m overcomplicating stuff, but the example demonstrated here is a simplified version of the real rules, which have more logic inside them. The reason why I’m trying to do it this way is because I want want to reuse calculation logic in other specifications, and sometimes change the order they’re applied based on the benefit data.

The roadbump that I’ve hit is that some necessary information is not available on the BenefitData alone and to get them I would have to break the interface. I thought about registering the benefit rule in the DI Container and accessing the database to get the data, but something about this approach doesn’t feel right.

installation – Mathematica on Manjaro Linux: Lots of $Failed buttons after a fresh install

I’ve been running Mathematica on Manjaro for a couple years and it has always worked out of the box. However, after a recent fresh install of Manjaro and Mathematica, all buttons show the message $Failed. I have successfully activated Mathematica, and the notebooks are working, but this issue is annoying.

I already checked the system fonts, package dependences, and can’t find the problem. I’m running GNOME (the problem persists in XORG and Wayland sessions).

Does anyone have faced the same issue?

performance – Disk usage reporting script performing poorly with lots of files

I am running a PowerShell script that gets show disk usage for drives into html reports. While this works quite well it has a problem on some file servers with a massive amount of files. It can sometimes take up to 1 day in a worst case scenario which obviously isn’t ideal. I’m wondering if there if there any way to optimize this script so it performs much quicker?

From testing the bulk of the slowness seems to stem from the
# iterate all subdirectories and # iterate all files sections although there may be others beyond this that i’m missing.

Any tips/suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

terminal – Edit lots of profiles in iTerm2

A longtime user of Terminal on the Mac, a colleague recently recommended iTerm2. I had a play around with it, and the same colleague gave me his Profiles JSON file. In vim, I was able to do a global replace of his username with mine, to change the ssh profiles. However, he uses a white background and black text, and the font is far too small for me.

Is there any way to know what to change in the JSON, which is 16,334 lines long, so there’s no question of doing it manually?

I essentially want to make all of my ssh sessions open with a dark green background, yellow text and with the entire window enlarged to where it would be if I did roughly eight presses on CMD+.

macos – Weird folder setup in Big Sur compared to Mojave. Lots of questions

Everything is correct. This is all due to the split of the system volume (Macintosh HD or whatever you called it) into a read-only volume and a read-write volume.

Start by looking at the disk with Disk Utility. Press Command-2 (or tick Menu -> View -> Show All Devices). You should see something like this (the names will be different):

Within the APFS container you can see two volumes. In myself case BethSSD and BethSSD – Data. In what follows replace these with your own system volume name.

BethSSD is the read-only (highly protected) volume created by the macOS install and has the same content same on every Mac with the same version of macOS.

BethSSD – Data is a read-write volume and contains everything not part of the read-only volume. As well as your files, it includes all the application you have installed.

So we have two volumes and both will have applications – so Finder does some trickery to show them as one.

Taking your three locations (but in a different order) and a fourth:

2 The applications on the read-only volume are the Apple macOS applications and can be seen in /System/Applications.

4 (what you have not seen): In Terminal do ls /System/Volumes/Data/Applications. Here you will see all the applications you have installed – but none of the inbuilt macOS apps.

1 and 3. macOS combines the two locations above into one using “firmlinks”. These are what you are seeing as/System/Volumes/<name>/Applications as well as /Applications.

website design – Nice DB GUI for Lots of (ideally rich formatted) Text

I am designing a workflow processing system. I have many (hundreds) of workflows that in many cases are variants of each other and have related characteristics.

In the beginning development stages I need to document these workflows in a way that less-technical personnel can interface with. They break down their usage scenario and document it all in one place, the dev team will go through later and write code to implement their descriptions.

All I need to do is make a giant spreadsheet with each row containing a single workflow specification, with columns such as “Inputs”, “Outputs”, “Process Description”, and “Implementation Status.”

The Process Description field will contain several paragraphs and ordered lists describing the potentially intricate process and any nuances/gotchyas in human readable form.

Typing all of this information into an Excel spreadsheet is tedious and people keep hitting Enter instead of Shift+Enter. Reading it requires expanding the row or column dimensions, which makes scrolling through to quickly check the status intractable. Keeping the dimensions small makes entering data hard. Cutting and pasting blocks of text to break apart and reorganize the descriptions is…you guessed it, beyond unintuitive.

Has anyone come up with a solution with a good UI that can store information like this? And has a collapse-all/expand-all toggle?

Maybe I should roll-my-own database-backed web app…Is anyone interested in working with me to develop this as a product?

Of less importance but still kind of pretty important, is the relationships. For example Workflow 302 might use the same inputs and outputs as 303, and the process description needs only a few, very critical, words to be changed.

I feel like MS Access would be along the lines of what I’m looking for to potentially support data relationships; however once again being able to type a few nicely formatted paragraphs or a page of text within one cell needs to be a painless process.
