startup – Ubuntu 20.04 suddenly not working when started connected to external montiors

I’m using a Lenovo Thinkpad which came with Windows but I’ve wiped it and have used Ubuntu 20.04 for quite a while. After some initial issues getting everything to work with 3 external monitors via a docking station everything worked fine.

Today, when I cleaned up my cable setup a bit and stuck everything back in place (probably not every cable at the exact same place) it would not work when I started it.

I had previously followed this:

Is there to make the login screen appear on the external display in 18.04?

Which worked when using the accepted answer but now, no matter what I do seemingly, if I boot the laptop with the external monitors connected they all go black (including the built in display, which is usually fine since I have that disabled and the other 3 enabled).

Does anyone have any idea how this could be solved? The only work around I have currently is to start the computer with nothing connected and then connect everything after it has booted and logged in.

Any help would be appreciated!

drivers – Bluetooth suddenly turn off and wont turn on on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

I’m using Ubuntu since a week now, the only issue I have is the buetooth suddenly stop working and turning on is disabled in settings saying “No bluetooth found – Plug in a dongle to use bluetooth”.

In the terminal I tried the following:

$ sudo -i
$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no

Then: bluetoothctl

Agent registered
(bluetooth)# power off
No default controller available
(bluetooth)# power on
No default controller available

Is like someone disconnect the bluetooth module. Restarting can resolve the issue.
I use a bluetooth mouse (Logitech MX Ergo) and a bluetooth headphones.
If I restart the bluetooth start working again.

I use Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and Linux 5.8.0-40-generic kernel.

Can’t access my phone memory suddenly after using SD card as internal memory

A few weeks ago I integrated my SD card to use as phone memory. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago.

All of a sudden I saw the “insert SD card” notice appear on the notification bar. I open the back cover but the SD card looked like it was in place. I remove it and insert it back and the notice disappears. But then I notice that when I go to file explorer (FX) to access my files, it says “Access was denied”. I can’t access anything that is on my phone memory, although the apps are working. I guess system files are OK, but everything else is not.

My phone is rooted so I tried to access the files through TWRP but I can only see system folders.

Phone is a Moto C plus. Nougat.

trading – Why does the Bitcoin price just suddenly “flat-out” and stay like this (seemingly) forever?

I’m not gonna lie. I really did think that this time, it was going to keep going up constantly, or at least until a much higher point. But then it just stopped, and I’m very annoyed by it in a way which is hard to describe. Even at 100k, I would only barely be able to buy a house and pay the necessary bills for a few years with the coins I own. So I definitely don’t share the enthusiasm that others have about the price being “crazy”. I assume that they think so only because they have tons of Bitcoins, whereas I only have very little.

The Bitcoin price really does affect my mood, and waking up to 36k feels like it might as well be 1k at this point.

What is it about “the market” that makes it suddenly pay so much more and then stop that after a while? I can’t stand another several years of it staying at this level or even going back down.

errors – My CSS suddenly doesn’t load anymore

I’ve did some small changes on my CSS, nothing crazy, uploaded them to my website. Cleared my cache and suddenly, the website doesn’t show my custom styles.

My styles are included in the enqueue.php file, but it always worked.

if (!function_exists('understrap_scripts')) {
     * Load theme's JavaScript and CSS sources.
    function understrap_scripts()
        // Get the theme data.
        $the_theme = wp_get_theme();
        $theme_version = $the_theme->get('Version');

        wp_enqueue_style('slider-slider-styles', '');
        wp_enqueue_style('lity-style', '');
        $css_version = $theme_version . '.' . filemtime(get_template_directory() . '/css/theme.min.css');
        wp_enqueue_style('understrap-styles', get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/css/theme.min.css', array(), $css_version);

} // endif function_exists( 'understrap_scripts' ).

add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', 'understrap_scripts', 10);

If I check my source code in the browser, it seems that the slider-slider-styles and lity-style are loaded, but not my styles “understrap-styles”.

The file is available on the server because I can directly open the file in my browser.

sync – Super old email contacts suddenly appears in my phone contacts

When I woke up this morning I suddenly had 6 new contacts added to my contact book on my phone. All of them were emails, some of them I recognize from WAY back but I sure haven’t had contact with them in a LONG time. I guess they were added in some kind of sync activity, but I’m pretty sure none of these addresses that were added, is featured in any of the accounts I’m currently using (gmail, yahoo) etc. I had contact with these people way before this

Why did this happen?

Is there any way to find out where a specific contact were synced from?

hard drive – Cannot boot anymore. Disk suddenly empty?

So, a friend of mine worked on his laptop, walked to the kitchen, came back 5 minutes later and saw this:

enter image description here

And this:

enter image description here

So apparently, for some reason the laptop rebooted and couldn’t boot anymore from the hard drive. We tried to remove the hard drive and connect it via USB, to exclude any errors from internal cables or connections. But it still did not work.

As a next step, I attached the hard drive to my laptop via USB to see if Windows recognize it. When I open the windows disc manager, the hard drive looks like this:

enter image description here

So it looks as if the disk were empty and unpartitioned. I also did a quick check on bad sectors, and it seems the drive is fine.

There definitely should be data on the hard drive. Windows is installed and he had a lot of documents and whatnot on the drive. How can it be, that it suddenly shows as completely empty and not bootable anymore? Any hints on how I can repair the disk to a] keep the files and b] make it bootable again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

terminal – Apps suddenly can’t be opened?

I had Terminal and TextEdit open, a couple of Finder windows, and possibly another app or two.

This was a few hours after updating to macOS 11.1 (20C69) in case that is the cause.

In Terminal, I did su - Admin to change permissions on a directory with sudo. I forgot to exit before trying to open a new file with TextEdit, so of course I got an error (one account can’t open windows in another app’s GUI).

Exited Admin and tried again. Got the same error! Quit TextEdit and re-launched—same error!

Restarted laptop and logged in again. Now, Terminal and Safari can’t be launched (possibly others). Pop-up appears and vanishes quickly. After several tries, I finally managed to read the first line: “Application (app) interrupted restart.”

Switched user to Admin to send this question. Safari & Terminal both functioning on this account.

In the Admin account, interestingly, when tried to use sudo, I was rejected. Did id and found that that the shell (in Terminal launched by admin account) was running my non-admin account!!! Had to su to kill processes (see my answer).

Cause and/or solution?

windows 10 – Why, suddenly, will some laptop keys (e.g. F2, tab) not respond until held down?

I am using an HP 450 Probook G6. Until a couple of days ago the keyboard had worked perfectly since the machine was new approx 2 years ago.

Suddenly, the F2 and Tab keys have started failing to register intermittently – they seem to “go to sleep”. This means that e.g. Ctrl+Tab to change apps won’t work. I’ve found that pressing and holding the key for approx 2 seconds sometimes “wakes it up”. The key then works normally again, for a short period (usually 30-60 seconds). Then it will stop working again and I will need to repeat the process.

I have tried the following, without success:

  • Checking all keyboard settings including e.g. sticky keys.
  • Checking all language settings including ‘input mode’.
  • Updating the BIOS.
  • Updating the keyboard driver.
  • Reverting to a system restore point a few days before the problem first occurred.
  • Searching extensively online for other suggestions.
  • Stopping other applications and services to try to identify another process that might be interfering with key presses.

I am running Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.18363, with latest updates. I am not running any keyboard interceptor apps. I haven’t deliberately installed any new software in the last week. Nothing is obviously wrong with the keyboard (e.g. spillages etc) and when the keys are working, they work completely normally, so I’m sure this isn’t a physical problem.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms? Before I try radical workarounds like remapping keys, can anyone suggest anything I could try to diagnose or fix this?
