recovery mode – How to restore TWRP backup when in boot loop?

My phone is stuck in boot loop after suffering water damage. It only reaches the boot loop when I’m charging, otherwise it does not react at all.

My phone is a Galaxy S5 Plus/kccat6/SM-G901F and runs lineageos. TWRP is installed.

Here are the things I tried, in the order I tried them. After each attempt, I tried to reboot, the error is still there.

Restore backup from device

  1. boot to recovery mode
  2. select restore
  3. notice that there are no backup files found on the device

Restore backup from pc

  1. boot to recovery mode
  2. connect to pc
  3. try to mount USB-OTP
  4. “unable to mount”

Flash new lineageos image via heimdall

  1. confirm heimdall is running by typing heimdall version
  2. boot phone to download mode
  3. type heimdal print-pit to check if device is found
  4. ERROR: Failed to detect compatible download-mode device.

Install lineageos from recovery via adb

  1. boot phone to recovery mode
  2. select sideload
  3. on host, type adb sideload
  4. error: no devices/emulators found

I’ve read this thread, but since I’m stuck in boot loop I cannot enable USB debugging on the device.

Factory reset

  1. recovery mode
  2. select wipe
  3. wipe
  4. reboot
  5. still boot loop

However, it doesn’t ask me for my decryption pattern anymore, so the reset must have been at least partly successful.

6.0 marshmallow – I cannot flash TWRP to Android 6.0

I have encountered issues while trying to flash twrp to my android device using adb and fastboot. After booting to bootloader, my next step is supposed to be typing “fastboot flash recovery twrp.img” (without quotes). However, when I do that, the computer says “downloading *bytes” ( * being a seven or eight figure number which I cannot read since it disappears quickly) then immediately restarts leaving my android phone saying “read USB error”. What could be the problem? I am using windows xp SP2

rooting – TWRP is stuck at the boot screen when trying to flash twrp on Mi A2

I am trying to root my Mi A2 android phone. I am following this tutorial. When I try fastboot boot path/to/twrp/image the phone gets stuck on the boot screen. What am I doing wrong? Is it because a] I don’t have required drivers or because b] I have to disable force encryption? If a] I have to install new drivers what are they, where do I get them and how do I install them? If it is b] about disabling force enryption then how to do it?

Moto-Z Play with TWRP 3.4 asking for password

I have exactly the same problem and took the same steps. Also no effect so I did a full wipe from within TWRP -> cancel on PW page to get in TWRP -> Wipe -> format data -> yes (actually type yes) -> enter -> back -> reboot -> power off -> boot to fastboot (volume down + power button)-> start TWRP.
Now I can use TWRP (without a PW) but you can never boot to android because your system will get encrypted again and you cannot access your data anymore via TWRP.

Have not yet flashed a new rom but I bet I can since the system is no longer encrypted.

Format an SD card from TWRP recovery using shell

I’m trying to format/partition an SD card (that was used as an encrypted storage on an android phone) because it only shows as 15 MB while it’s supposed to be 2 GB.

I was intending to install a ROM from TWRP recovery but made a mistake and wiped everything including the SD card and selected “format” to remove encryption but forgot that the SD card had the zip to be installed…

I don’t have access to a reliable USB cable which is probably why adb sideloading didn’t work for me.

Here is what I tried from the TWRP terminal:

~ # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Available Used Mounted on
tmpfs 361.1M 16.0K 361.1M 0% /dev
tmpfs 361.1M 20.0K 361.1M 0% /tmp
/dev/block/mmcblk0p19 2.2G 38.7M 2.1G 2% /data
/dev/block/mmcblk0p19 2.2G 38.7M 2.1G 2% /sdcard
/dev/block/mmcblk0p16 196.8M 4.4M 192.4M 2% /cache
/dev/block/mmcblk1p1 16.0M 24.0K 15.9M 0% /external_sd

(Why tmpfs and mkcblk0p19 listed twice with different mount points?)

I know that the block mmcblk1 is the sd card because it disappears when I physically remove it and reboot.

I tried the following:

~ # umount -f /dev/block/mmcblk1p1

~ # fdisk /dev/block/mmcblk1
Found valid GPT with protective MBR: using GPT

Command (m for help): p

But it didn’t change anything.

And, I see the files /dev/block/mmcblk1, /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 and /dev/block/mmcblk1p2.

But mmcblk1p2 is not in fstab:

 ~ # cat /etc/fstab
 /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 /system ext4 rw 0 0
 /dev/block/mmcblk0p19 /data ext4 rw 0 0
 /dev/block/mmcblk0p16 /cache ext4 rw 0 0
 /dev/block/mmcblk0p15 /efs ext4 rw 0 0
 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /external_sd vfat rw 0 0

I don’t have a card reader but I tried the sd card in another phone and plugged it to windows and it shows 16 MB there as well.

Question: How do I format the sd card from android terminal so that I can use it normally again?

twrp – How to replace /dev/block/bootdevice/config with a blank one?

Is there a way to sideload the empty file, or access shell with root anyhow so I can dd if zero /of it?
The phone is an old moto E4. Encrypted. OEM not unlocked. Can’t install TWRP either I don’t know how to start it in EMMC if there is a way to do so. I have no access to the google account anymore the recovery phone number belonged to my old German phone number. I just want to resurrect it for the cats for fun.

twrp – Bootloader unlocking with a locked bootloader, unlock tool inop

I have a Asus tf700t tablet running 4.2.1,i want to upgrade to 7.0,bootloader locked, I tried the V8 Asus unlock tool,

Received “unknown error, possibly network problem, try again later,
Researched, couldn’t really find a solution, essentially said server issue with Asus

Debugging enabled, unknown sources enabled, Play store Play protect off, there’s a setting in Google Chrome, but I can’t remember what it is, maybe someone here can help with that also, I’ll change it if I can find it,
Developer options enabled, no option for OEM unlock

I would like to unlock the bootloader so I can use Twrp to update the OS, no longer any updates available

BTW,device is rooted,SU installed

Thank you for any help or advise, if needed I can provide build number and kernel version, it’s an older tablet, but does have the good Tegra chipset, and definitely works well, but slowly,,,,

twrp – How to decrypt a phone in bootloop mode

I have an encrypted android running LineageOS 15. When it said that there was an OTA update, I choose to download and install this new update. In the first moment it seemed to be alright but when the phone restarted itself the recovery (TWRP) appeared again… and again…

It is in a bootloop mode and there is nothing I can do without loss my data and I can’t do nothing to copy my date due to the full disk encryption.

The encryption was made, I think, with the fingerprint and even if it was done with a password I cannot decrypt the entire disk (with the command adb shell twrp decrypt) because my TWRP version doesn’t support the decryption.

recovery mode – TWRP mount storage
