permissions – What can an app like WhatsApp acess on my phone

The app WhatsApp would like to have permission to access my device’s photos, media and files.

If I grant permission, exactly what can (could) the application access?
Can it access all of the photos on my phone? Or just the photos I have shared or downloaded with the app?
Can it access all of the phone’s media?
Can it access all of the files on the phone?

Or does Android restrict what it can access? If so, what does it restrict it to and how?

I’m not interested in what WhatsApp says it will or won’t access, or even what it has promised in its EULA. I’m interested in what it could access, if it wanted to.

chrome for android – WhatsApp Built in Scanner Won’t Work

I have spent 2 days reading everything on the web concerning this issue and trying all the solutions suggested, with no success.

The problem:

When I try to connect to to WhatsApp Web, the QR will show on the screen, but the phone will not read it. It seems its not even trying to read it, because I don’t see the process line I used to see running up and down the scanner (though I have re-installed WhatsApp, so maybe the new version simply does not have that line, I don’t know).

Relevant Information:

I am using Chrome, and my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 with Android 8.0.0.
I have been using Whatsapp Web successfully for nearly a year with the same laptop, same browser, same phone. Once in every 2-3 months I get disconnecte/logged out from the web version, so I set it up again (the usual way, reading the QR code and everything) without any problem, so its not like I am holding it wrong or something like that. I got disconnected again 2 days ago and cant set it up since.

The problem started after I reset my Chrome browser to clean all extensions and add ons (because I had 3 google accounts and 2 chrome profiles and I wanted to go down to having only one Chrome Profile linked to my main Google Account.During this clean-up process all favorites and add ons got lost, which is OK, because I wanted to start fresh, but it seems logical that the problem I am now facing with whatsapp web has something to do with that (or at least – that this is the reason why I got disconnected in the first place.

Here’s what I checked/tried so far:

  1. My internet connection is fine and the speed is normal for both phone and laptop.
  2. The QR code and phone camera are fine – I had no problem reading the QR code with 3rd party scanners (not the one within whatsapp) – It worked within less than a second.
  3. I cleared cookies and browsing data on Chrome – didnt help.
  4. I installed Edge and Tried with that browser (just for the test, I dont like it) – It didn’t work.
  5. I rebooted both laptop and phone – didn’t work.
  6. I un-installed and re-installed whatsapp on my phone – didn’t work.
  7. I’ve checked whether there are any updates to my phone software. There are none. It is up to date.
  8. I ran Avast on my PC, and than installed Restoro and ran it too – with no impact.
  9. I made the QR code larger to 175% as some suggested (though I didnt expect it to work because like I said, I’ve done it many times before without having to enlarge the QR).
  10. My phone screen is not too small, I see the “OK, got it” button. Like I said, using the same phone I used before without any problems.
  11. I thought maybe there is a conflict between the 3rd party QR scanner (which I downloaded recently) and the one within whatsapp, so I un-installed the 3rd party = didnt help (again I remind you that the other qr scanner had no problem reading the code so its not a camera issue).
  12. I read that some people found out that the whatsapp scanner does not work with wifi so I turned off wifi on the phone to use the cellular network – did not work. turned it on again – didn’t work. switched plane mode on and off again – did not work.
  13. (Added) Cleared the cache of the camera app – no impact.

I do not wish to use an Android emulator on my laptop, which I understand is a workaround.
I really love Whatsapp web, hate to type on the phone. I am just about to give up.

Anyone? Anything? i will be forever in your debt 🙂

Multiple backups of whatsapp – Android Enthusiasts Stack Exchange

Suppose I take backup of my whatsapp on Google drive. Let’s call this backup A. Then, I uninstall whatsapp, and reinstall it without restoring from backup. After using the app for 5 months, I take backup again on the same Google drive account. Let’s call this backup B. Now I uninstall the app and reinstall it. Will I get to restore from backup B only? Or, I will get to choose from either of the backups? Is it possible to restore from both the backups?

WhatsApp – Auto Creates thumbnails in the DCIM directory – Cannot be stopped

How do I control which images I see when I click the camera icon in WhatsApp? Which app calls this "latest"? Can WhatsApp point out that only the DCIM directory is shown on my SD card?

After installing WhatsApp, grant permission to use the camera and your files. Images are usually saved in the DCIM folder. So if you want to take a picture with WhatsApp with the camera, WhatsApp will display pictures from the default folder where pictures are stored due to access to your storage (although this is not the folder where WhatsApp stores its pictures) other locations. What follows is the creation of thumbnails (if they have not yet been created) in case you want to display / use other images.

If you don't deny both camera and memory privileges, you have no control. If you deny permission to save, you can use other files, not just pictures.

How can I prevent the old thumbnails from appearing again in the directory Internal Storage / DCIM / .thumbnails when the camera app is started via WhatsApp?

Regardless of whether it is WhatsApp or another app, you cannot prevent this as long as you have permissions for your storage and / or your camera. I think MediaStorage will recreate them in any way, if not immediately, at least the next time you restart or use the camera.

Error – WhatsApp sends media to random contacts

My phone was acting strange when I sent WhatsApp messages – I think that only happens with media messages – they go to additional contacts sometimes, i.e. H. I send a photo to X, but by chance Y also gets it.
The phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8.

I've tried googling the problem, but I can't seem to find anything like it. Did anyone come across it?

icloud – restore WhatsApp messages after iPhone crash

The following happened, I would be very grateful if you would help me:

  • April 29: WhatsApp last backup
  • May 6 evening: IPhone ICloud last backup
  • I don't open Whatsapp for a whole day and most of my conversations are muted
  • May 7: iPhone crashes, nothing to do about it
  • May 8: I get a new iPhone, ICloud restores everything
  • I have messages from my family while the old phone crashed. I also have texts from April 30th, May 1st etc. after the last WhatsApp backup
  • I have no texts between the evening of May 6th and May 7th. So between the last backup of the iPhone and the crash. There is only one person who could have written to me, but they were muted and I never opened. Is it possible that I have lost / missed your (possible) message?
