terminal – Missing corrupted external SSD

I have an external SSD that has become corrupted due to writing files while the Mac feel asleep. There’s nothing important on the drive, so I’m not worried about any data loss.

My problem is that the macs I have don’t seem to recognize the disk when it’s plugged in. It doesn’t show up in Disk Utility. And it doesn’t show up in terminal with diskutil list.

The Hardware itself is all fine. This isn’t the first time this has happened. It’s the second. – The only way I could figure out how to fix it the first time was to plug it into a friends Windows PC and have him reformat it for me. But I’m looking for a way to do it myself, on a mac.

  • Running up to date Big Sur
  • SSD is formatted for APFS
